Severe weather was to continue sweeping across the Plains on Tuesday, while thunderstorms slipped over the Mississippi Valley and high pressure kept the interior West clear.

A cold front was to extend from the Upper Midwest into northern Texas, kicking up showers and thunderstorms as it moves eastward toward the Southeast. Severe weather was likely to develop anywhere along this front, which has had a history of producing strong winds and hail.

In the East, mostly sunny skies and dry conditions were expected over New England, the mid-Atlantic states and the Southeast.

The Pacific Northwest was to see widespread scattered showers. Snow also was likely at elevations higher than 4,000 feet. Warm and dry conditions were to persist over California and the Southwest.

Temperatures in the Lower 48 states on Monday ranged from a low of 17 degrees at Copper Mountain, Colo., to a high of 97 degrees at Thermal, Calif.
