A Timely Reminder
Posted by: Carol Platt Liebau at 10:49 PM
The accounts of the terrorist attacks in India reveal the existence of sadly underprepared Indian security forces.

It's comforting to hope and believe that American forces would be better equipped to confront the kind of situation that unfolded in Mumbai.  But these events are also a reminder that America still has enemies who, no doubt, would gladly have pulled the same stunt at, say, the Waldorf-Astoria in Manhattan.

That is, if they could.  And although it's become fashionable to castigate George W. Bush as a failed president, it's also worth keeping in mind that he has worked hard to make sure that our country stays alert to the terrorist threat that only emerged most recently in Mumbai -- and that we remain committed to dealing with it.

England Has a "Happiness Tsar"?
Posted by: Carol Platt Liebau at 3:18 PM
A prominent Catholic cleric in England has accused Disney of "corrupting" children by promoting materialism.

Frankly, his argument is silly.  At least Disney classics feature the concept of the conflict between good and evil -- a refreshing change in a culture that, too often, embraces the concepts of moral relativism.  Of all the potential sources of corruption for children existing today, Disney hardly seems to be at the head of the pack.

But the most arresting part of the linked piece is a reference to Lord Layard, described as Britain's "happiness Tsar."  England has a "happiness Tsar"?

The "Small Donor" Myth
Posted by: Carol Platt Liebau at 3:14 PM
Just another hole in the Obama-myth wall:  The LA Times' Andrew Malcolm reports on a study proving that the Obama campaign's "small donor base" was, in fact, a myth.

Poking Holes in 'No Drama'
Posted by: Matt Lewis at 1:30 PM
It never ceases to amaze me how political writers tend believe that something that works today will also work tomorrow.

Today's NYT makes that common mistake, by playing up Barack Obama's "cool factor."  The piece, of course, is merely the latest example of worshiping the calmness and coolness of No Drama Obama....

First, it should be noted that, while being overly emotional is never a wise move, being too cool can also be a negative.

In the 1988 presidential debate, Bernard Shaw asked Michael Dukakis: "Governor, if Kitty Dukakis were raped and murdered, would you favor an irrevocable death penalty for the killer?"

Dukakis' passionless, calm, and logical answer was:   "No, I don't, and I think you know that I've opposed the death penalty during all of my life."

This, of course, was spoofed on SNL -- and Dukakis went on to lose.  So, in Dukakis' case, being "no drama" was a negative...

Of course, you should never count on writers to inject any sort of historical context into a given column.  Frankly, many of them don't know history -- even history that is a mere 20 years old (in fairness, at the very end of the column, the writer does note that Winston Churchill was an emotional sort, and also implies that being too calm can backfire).

Still, the big message is that Obama is one cool customer.  In truth, though, today's virtue is tomorrow's vice; what works for Obama today might not work for Obama tomorrow.  Jimmy Carter's cardigan-wearing image was a refreshing contrast to the days of Johnson and Nixon -- but it wore thin.  Obama's shtick, too, may wear thin.  One can imagine the media's amnesia kicking-in a few years from now -- say after a crisis or calamity where Obama is overly "cool".  Of course, the columnists will then write that Obama lacks the compassion needed to be president in modern times...

One note:  I don't believe media bias is at play here.  I recall several stories that came out about how Bush's style was a refreshing, winning formula.  This, of course, was several years ago...

Jindal for Prez 2012 Begins Today?
Posted by: Matt Lewis at 8:04 AM

Today's WaPost features a long profile on LA Gov. Bobby Jindal:
Like the president-elect, Gov. Bobby Jindal of Louisiana is young (37), accomplished (a Rhodes scholar) and, as the son of Indian immigrants, someone familiar with breaking racial and cultural barriers. He came to Iowa to deliver a pair of speeches, and his mere presence ignited talk that the 2012 presidential campaign has begun here, if coyly. Already, a fierce fight is looming between him and other Republicans -- former Arkansas governor Mike Huckabee, who arrived in Iowa a couple of days before him, and Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, who is said to be coming at some point -- for the hearts of social conservatives.
Under the man headline are the words:

"Jindal May Prove To be Republicans' Version of Obama"

My theory is that elections are often reactions (or overreactions) to the current president.  As such, Obama's style was in clear contrast to George W. Bush.  Sarah Palin's problem was that she was perceived to be too similar (stylistically) to an unpopular -- and too familiar -- President Bush.

Of course, the question is whether or not the things that work today will work in the future.  It very well might be that Americans are sick of the aloof, intellectual Obama, and are looking for a more folksy alternative.  If that's the case, Palin will be very well positioned.

On the other hand, it is very possible that Obama's campaign is the beginning of a new trend in politics.  If that's the case, Jindal is, perhaps, the perfect candidate.  He is a conservative policy wonk/intellectual who has proven himself (so far) to be highly competent.

This will be fun to watch...

How Far Generalities Take You
Posted by: Carol Platt Liebau at 3:04 PM
Reacting to a David Brooks column that excitedly heralded the Obama administration as a "valedictocracy" stuffed with Ivy League credentials,
Joseph Epstein has written an essay in The Weekly Standard characterizing the products of America's most elite universities as little more than A-grabbing, soulless mediocrities.

In many cases, he's right.  And I, too, took issue with Brooks' column here, pointing out that "book smarts" don't necessarily equate with "life smarts" or, for that matter, most of the qualities essential to really fine leadership.

But just as there is a danger in Brooks' uncritical acceptance of the idea that elite degrees confer merit, there is a danger that the rest of us can adopt a knee-jerk anti-elitist stance that's almost as ill-advised.  Just as it's snobbish and wrong to laugh at Sarah Palin for having attended the University of Idaho, it's likewise wrong (and as reverse-snobbish) to sneer at and discount someone else who attended Yale.

Of course, a lot of the time, stereotypes (like those about the Ivy League) contain some grain of truth.  But as with everything else in life, generalities only inform so much.  Both the elitists and the anti-elitists have to come to terms with the fact that Obama advisors will (and should) be judged on their own merits and performance alone.

Another Call for Rangel to Resign from Ways & Means
Posted by: Amanda Carpenter at 10:57 AM
Photobucket

The New York Times and the Washington Post have called on Rep. Charlie Rangel (D.-N.Y.) to step down from as chair of the Ways & Means committee until an ethics investigation on his personal finances is completed.

The New York Times called on Rep. Charlie Rangel to resign his chairmanship from the powerful Ways & Means Committee in September when all his financial shenanigans were beginning to come to light. Now the Washington Post is calling for the chairman's ouster, too.

Neither of these calls, however, have gotten much play in the cable television news programs.

The House Ways & Means chairmanship is especially potent because the Constitution dictates only the House has the power to raise revenue (taxes) and this is the house committee charged with that duty. As chair, Rangel is able to craft tax-raising legislation, schedule it for a committee vote and then send it to the full House for a vote. From there the bill can go to the Senate and then finally, to the President's desk for his signature.

"While he remains innocent until proven otherwise, he should step aside as chairman while the ethics committee expands its inquiry," wrote the editors of the Washington Post today.

The NYT's September editorial made the same request. Last Tuesday, the NYT reported that Rangel has secured a tax break for an oil company whose CEO made a $1 million donation to the Charles B. Rangel of Public Service at the City College of New York. This revelation is what spurred the Washington Post to call on Rangel to step aside.

Reporters discovered a myriad of personal financial problems related to Rangel's homes and campaign fundraising over the summer. Rangel was found illegally using a Harlem rent-stabilized apartment for campaign purposes, improperly sending letters on congressional letterhead to solicit donations for his pet projects and owing somewhere around $75,000 on his beach house at a yacht resort in the Dominican Republic. “Every time I thought I was getting somewhere, they’d start speaking Spanish," he said as an excuse. Rangel rented the beach house for as much as $1,000 a week to tourists in the high season.

He was even illegally storing his vintage Benz in the House parking garage. The plates had been over the unmoved car for years. Technically, Rangel was supposed to report this parking perk as a gift on his financial disclosure forms, but he never bothered.

Rangel insists these ethical lapses should not cause him to lose his position. House Speaker Nancy Pelosis has called for an investigation that is scheduled to be completed on January 3. The editors at the Post want to see action sooner.

"At a time when President-elect Barack Obama is holding frequent news conferences to reassure the markets and the American people that he is ready to lead the nation to economic recovery, the last thing he will need is a chairman of Ways and Means caught up in a swirl of serious allegations," the Post editors wrote.

Clinton Basher Working on State Department Transition Team
Posted by: Amanda Carpenter at 9:27 AM
Remember Samantha Power? She was one of the up and coming foreign policy thinkers for Barack Obama until she told the BBC his withdrawal plan wouldn't work and described Hillary Clinton a "monster" to a Scottish newspaper.

As a result Obama aced her from his team, but now she's back! And, she's is in very unlikely place considering the "monster" that could be soon be Secretary of State. That's right. Obama has tapped Powers to be one of the 14 people to help smooth the transition in the State Department between the Bush and Obama administration.

How do you think Clinton feels about this one?!?! Clinton hasn't been given the job yet, but the Clinton and Obama camps have hinted an announcement could come sometime after Thanksgiving.

Clinton used the monster comment to raise money during the Democratic primary by sending an email to supporters that said "there is a price to this kind of political attacks."

Can a Non RNC Member be Chair?
Posted by: Matt Lewis at 10:53 AM
The rules allow for it, but if this is any indication, there is some resistance to electing a chairman who is not an RNC member.

... Or are we going to see a compromise solution -- the "general chairman" model -- where a high-profile spokesman is teamed with a behind-the-scenes pol?

Oh, No, Joe!
Posted by: Carol Platt Liebau at 9:47 AM
Over at Politico, Carol E. Lee notes the very, very low profile of Joe Biden so far in the presidential transition.

My guess is that Biden had better get used to it.  In the wake of the Russian invasion of Georgia, Obama realized that, for politics' sake, he needed at least one member of the ticket with foreign policy credentials, and didn't want Hillary Clinton.  (Without the Russian invasion, he might well have picked Tim Kaine.)

It seems that Obama genuinely likes Biden, but it would take a moron (and that, Obama definitely is not) not to realize that Biden is a one-man gaffe machine.  Who can blame him for figuring that no one needs the distraction of another Biden foot-in-mouth moment?

With Hillary Clinton as secretary of state, the foreign policy rationale for Biden's presence is pretty much gone.  And the evidence that Biden was picked for political, rather than substantive, reasons continues to mount.
